Why did my hive die?

A dead colony leaves evidence. If you haven't cleaned the boxes out yet, most of the answer is still sitting in them, and it's worth reading before you scrape it away.

Before you do anything else: don't clean it out yet. The position of the dead bees, what's left in the comb, and what the brood cells look like are the whole diagnosis. Photograph the frames, both sides, and leave the boxes closed and stacked somewhere dry so wax moth doesn't finish the job.

Losing a colony feels like failure, and for a first-year beekeeper it often ends the hobby. It shouldn't. Losses happen to everyone, including people who have kept bees for decades, and the useful question is never "did I fail" but "what happened, and what do I change".

The honest headline: in the United States, the great majority of hobbyist colony losses trace back to varroa mites and the viruses they carry. Not pesticides, not Colony Collapse Disorder, not bad luck. That doesn't mean yours was mites, but it does mean mites are where a careful look starts.

What the equipment tells you

Different causes leave different pictures. This is a starting point, not a verdict, and the middle column is deliberately worded as suggests rather than means.

The one that catches people out

"There's still honey in there, so they can't have starved." Correct, and that's exactly the point. A box with stores still in it and hardly any bees is one of the more suggestive pictures for a mite-driven collapse, because the population fell faster than it could eat.

People find honey, conclude the bees must have been fine, and look for an exotic explanation. The ordinary one is usually right: the colony shrank away over the autumn while its food sat untouched.

If you want one more thing to look for, check the brood cells on a bright day. Mites leave pale, chalky-looking deposits on the upper wall inside the cell. It takes a good light and a bit of practice, and it's one of the clearer traces they leave behind.

Why autumn is when it happens here

The timing surprises people whose colony looked strong in midsummer. Mite numbers build through the season while the colony is growing, then the colony starts contracting for autumn and the mites don't. The ratio moves sharply against the bees at exactly the moment they're raising the long-lived workers meant to carry them through winter.

Those winter bees get damaged before they emerge. The colony can look reasonable in September and be hollow by November, and to the beekeeper it reads as sudden. It wasn't.

That's why counting mites through the summer matters more than treating on a calendar, and why a count in July tells you something a count in October cannot.

What about Colony Collapse Disorder?

Almost certainly not what happened. CCD describes a particular pattern reported largely in commercial operations in the late 2000s, and the term escaped into general use as a catch-all for any dead hive. It is rarely the explanation for a backyard loss today, and reaching for it tends to stop the investigation before it finds the ordinary answer sitting in the box.

One category to take seriously

If the brood cappings look sunken, greasy or perforated, and especially if there's an unpleasant smell, stop and get it looked at before you move, clean or reuse any of that equipment.

Those signs are consistent with American foulbrood, which behaves differently from everything else on this page: it spreads through contaminated equipment, and in California it is reportable. It is not common, and plenty of things look similar, so don't diagnose it from a photo and don't panic. But it's the one case where guessing wrong in either direction is expensive, so it gets confirmed rather than assumed.

Your county agricultural commissioner is the right first call, and I'm happy to come and look first if that's easier.

Can you reuse the equipment?

Usually yes, and drawn comb is genuinely valuable, so don't burn it on a hunch. A colony lost to mites or starvation generally leaves comb that a new colony will happily move into, and stored honey that gives them a head start.

The exception is the foulbrood category above. That's the reason to establish the cause before deciding, rather than after.

Whatever the cause, store the boxes sealed and dry. Wax moth will destroy unprotected comb in a Santa Barbara autumn faster than you'd expect.

This is one of the things I most like doing, partly because it's solvable and partly because the answer changes what you do next season. I'll go through the frames with you, tell you what I think and how confident I am, and be straight when the honest answer is that the evidence doesn't settle it.

Bring the boxes as they are. Uncleaned is better.

Frequently asked questions

My hive died but it's full of honey. Did they still starve?

Usually not. Stores left with almost no bees is more suggestive of a mite-driven collapse. Starvation tends to leave empty comb and bees head-first in the cells.

Was it Colony Collapse Disorder?

Almost certainly not. CCD is a specific pattern from commercial operations and is rarely the explanation for a backyard loss. Most hobbyist losses in the US come back to varroa.

I treated for mites. Can it still have been mites?

Yes, and it's common. Treatment applied doesn't always mean dose delivered, and timing matters enormously. Treating after the winter bees are already raised is often too late. A count before and after tells you whether it actually worked.

Can I reuse the frames and boxes?

Usually, and drawn comb is worth keeping. It depends on the cause, and there's one category where reuse spreads the problem, so it's worth settling the question first.

How soon should I look?

Soon. Wax moth, ants and mould all erase evidence, and a Santa Barbara autumn is kind to all three. Photograph the frames now even if you can't get to it properly for a week.

Is it too late to start again this year?

For a new colony, usually yes. Spring is the time, which means autumn and winter are exactly when to work out what happened and get set up properly.
